Food Photographer - New School

Food photographers are just as concerned about fashion as clothing photographers. Today's food style is often up-close and personal, with selective focus and few extraneous props. Imperfection and a casual arrangement is a part of the plan. Items in the background are often blurred, with the emphasis on the color and texture of the food.

Food is Beautiful

Some of my earliest commercial photography projects were cook book covers and illustrations. The first cook book cover I shot is in its 31st printing, and continues to be a strong seller after more than 15 years. The image with the large round of cheese and fruit bowl above was shot for a hospital menu cover, and printed 3 million in its first printing. I have worked with some amazing food stylists and chefs over the years, who have contributed to the work.

I made food photography my specialty because several of the books I read said that it was the most difficult of subjects. I felt that if I could excel at food photography, I could succeed with any subject. I believe that photography is "painting with light", and art form that is too often ignored because it happens in an instant. You will see a 3-D look to my food photography, and a feeling of light and shadow. It is this feeling of light that sets my work apart.
